Practical Suggestions to Help Tackle Bullying at School

Bullying - See It - Stop It - Report It!

Bullying can take many forms, none of which are pleasant. After writing this article,  I realise some of the reasons why I have written it, and the after-effects of doing so have all come back to me; flooding back to me in fact big time!

I therefore add this little section in retrospect, having written the bulk of the article about bullying at school and in the workplace.

I have realised that I have been a victim of bullying myself at school to quite an extent, and in my early years at work a lot too.

My bullying at work was partly as a result of my work colleagues in early days consisting of some of the same bullying people that I went to school with. So this was “unlucky” to some extent. Also the fact that my Uncle had a position of authority within the company, and people don’t like the managers usually!

A few quick tips here then thrown in before we go on which may be useful when changing schools or a job, or leaving school and starting a job, or at university etc…

• Do not allow bullying to follow you through life because people who know you from earlier before in life will gossip about you and pass on the so called “bad press” about you!
• Break old bully connections and leave them behind losing touch with them.
• Start anew with a new group of people when you move on.
• Cut off the old bullies so that new people can judge you for who you are, and not from “hear say”!
• Make new friends and re-circulate.
• Minimise and modify any behaviour you may think will have exacerbated the bullying
• Go to a different school, college, university, workplace and avoid the bullys.
• Go to different places for your entertainment, and avoid the bullys.

There will be more tips later to minimise bullying, and they will relate to the above and overlap maybe.

In a nutshell, I was different, and also maybe a “bit of a boffin” at school; as well as having “relatives in the company” when I started work. So none of this helped! Would you believe I also used to talk “posh” (plumb in mouth?) what happened to that? All of this added to the bullying “arsenal” available to my classmates!

Maybe I was an “open goal” to bullying?

The point is whatever I was as regards to bullying, it wasn’t fair, ethical, or right!

It has likely or probably damaged my inner self-confidence, affected my behaviour, and damaged my abilities and my career!

Until now! (I’ll explain at the end of the article, so hold on to your seat!), so back to the article…

Yes you may wonder how, or why so…

As a very analytical person myself, with a high set of realisations in life; I have been fortunate to analyse some of the reasons why I was bullied, the after-effects, and how I came full circle and didn’t let it bother me anymore. In fact it has enabled me to write this article, and to really embrace the subject, as well as vow to never ever be a bully myself, no matter how much a person is bullied by others; I vow to help them if indeed I can!

I’ll even accept that once I had a joke with a colleague at work; and that this went too far and offended them due to repeating it a few times too often; so this proves that not all bullying is deliberate or even intentional. Sometimes the roles do reverse!

We are not all the same, and not everyone can take a joke or some “fun” in quite the same way. If I have ever offended anyone in the past; I take this moment to apologise, and to say that I very much understand your position, or maybe your position in the past! Hopefully this will explain it a little, and provide help to you, and even a way out, or forward.

Types of bullying can take the following forms, which may not be a complete list by any means…

• Physical attacks actually on the person being bullied by one other person, or by a gang
• Verbal abuse directed to the person being bullied swearing or derogatory comments, slanderous etc.
• Racism against their race, colour, etc.
• Sexism against their sex, or sexuality, gay, straight, celibate, virgin etc.
• Ageism, against their age, old or young
• Religious bullying, can be about their faith, or lack of it
• Cyber bullying, on the computer, mobile phone, email, network, or on the Internet (social networks i.e. Facebook, Bebo, MySpace etc.)
• Gossip spread around to lower a persons appeal or opinion of them to others, influencing what people will think, even if true or untrue
• Bullying about peoples looks, or their opinion of their looks
• Bullying about peoples weight, overweight, or thin (in their opinion)
• Bullying people about their illnesses, taking the fun out of them
• Bullying because you don’t fit in, you may be clever, not so clever, different, eccentric, or unusual, maybe “a boffin” type
• Bullying because you are not very sporty
• Bulling because you are a quiet inoffensive person
• Bullying because you get on at work, get promoted, get on with your work etc.
• Bullying because of jealousy
• Bullying from siblings, relatives, or even parents!
• Bullying or being bullied because you don’t actually understand what bullying is, or if you are doing it! (yes it does happen)
• Lack of education leading to bullying
• A bad background or upbringing causing a person to be a bully, venting anger in other ways

Bullying At School

School and work can be dreadful places to be bullied, you are trapped in one place, nowhere to go, and looking for a way out of it. You have a “captive audience”, and there may appear no way out.

“The U.S. National Center for Education Statistics notes that while there has been some decline in reported school violence in that country, “students ages 12-18 were victims of about 2 million nonfatal crimes of violence or theft at school in 2001.” There has also been an increase in reports of school bullying.”

After Effects Of Bullying

Another quote…

“A recent survey in Britain indicated that when children are subjected to severe bullying, they are nearly seven times as likely to attempt suicide. The emotional pain that these children suffer is real. A 13-year-old boy who hanged himself left behind a note naming five people who had tormented him and had even extorted money from him. “Please save other children,” he wrote.”

This is a disgrace, I cried when I read this one here! I am showing and quoting the Daily Mirror article below, to show you all how bad it can get.

This needs to be shown to raise awareness of this subject in my opinion…

Isn’t this a disgusting and a disgraceful part of modern life, and an abuse of modern technology?

Extreme Bullying Bethany James Disgraceful Horriffic Injuries

Quoting from the Daily Mail newspaper below…

“The pupil bloodied and battered beyond recognition by teenage girls“

“Her face bloodied and battered, this is Bethany James, the latest victim of the pupil-on-pupil violence blighting Britain’s schools.

The appalling injuries inflicted on the 15-year-old are shocking enough. But what is more horrifying is that they were the work of two teenage girls.

“Bethany had been tormented by bullies at her school in Bradford, West Yorkshire, for four years ? including being subjected to a torrent of insults and abusive text and Internet messages.

But it was as she was leaving a video shop near her home in Undercliffe with friends on September 7 that she was beaten up.

She was kicked and punched to the ground by the girls, whom she recognised from school. They pulled her hair and stamped on her head as she lay helpless on the pavement.

One friend called her mother, who arrived in time to pull one of the girls away from Bethany and drive the injured girl to Bradford Royal Infirmary.

Mrs James, a 46-year-old hairdresser, and her husband Anthony rushed to the hospital.”

“Mr James, 47, a telecoms engineer, said: ‘It was horrific as a parent to see one of your children in a hospital bed covered in blood. I couldn’t believe it. It was only when I got to the hospital that I realised the full extent of the attack.’

Mrs James added: ‘I’ve never seen anything like it. One of the doctors said she looked like she’d been in a car crash.

‘Her nose was split open, her mouth had been kicked and her braces caused lacerations, her lips were badly swollen, she was covered in blood, it was all over her clothes, and lumps of her hair were missing.’

Mrs James claimed teachers had failed to put a stop to the repeated bullying endured by her daughter at Immanuel CE Community College in Thackley.

She said: ‘I’ve been to the school on at least six occasions to tell them Bethany was being bullied, but it has continued.

‘Since the attack she has been going to school for only two hours a day in the isolation unit, while these girls carry on as normal. The school wants her back in class as soon as possible, but who wants to go back to these animals?’

Two weeks on, Bethany is still in pain. She said: ‘My nose is still bruised and hurts at the top. I’m too embarrassed to go out.’

Police said two girls have been questioned as witnesses but no arrests have been made.

Chris Robinson, deputy head at Immanuel College, said: ‘Any bullying that the college becomes aware of is dealt with in a robust manner supported by the additional care we show for each other through our strong Christian ethos.’”

Someone always seems to be singled out for being bullied at school; I know this, because I saw it, and I was a victim of it at times myself. I’ll even admit to being bullied, actually made me want to bully back at others, (yes it does!). (End of Quote.)

Children and young people are being warned about sending sexually explicit images of themselves to others.

A 10-minute film showing the problems of “sexting” has been created by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (Ceop).

In Exposed, a teenage girl becomes distressed after images she sent to her boyfriend appear on the Internet.

Ceop says senders can also find they become victims of bullying or harassment.

Meanwhile, a survey by the Beatbullying charity suggested one in five 11 to 17-year-olds has received a sexually explicit or distressing text or e-mail.” (end of quote)

This warns about the dangers you can get into online if you are not careful!

• Do not promote yourself online and seek to much attention; one example is “sexting”, texting or emailing explicit images of yourself or others, which can fall into the wrong hands… warning here on this link below from the BBC… http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12385159
• Speak to your teacher and communicate properly and respectfully the problem, but discreetly, so you won’t appear a “grass”, “snitch” or “weak”.
• Speak to your parents calmly about it if you can or Childline
• If the bullying is serious, or involves weapons or bodily harm, report it to your teacher and headmaster, and even the police may be involved
• In between lessons, swiftly move from class to class, avoiding the bullies
• Do not loiter in corridors, toilets, refectories, canteens or other restaurant facilities
• Go home for lunch or get away at lunchtimes safely, possibly via different exits
• Arrive at school “just in time”, and leave promptly
• Use different buses if practical
• Get a lift from a parent,  guardian, or someone who you can trust and respect
• Do not give out your mobile number or email. If you have change them now!
• Keep away from social networks on the web, or block the people concerned if you know who they are, and how to do so.
• Stick to your friends if you have enough of them to help
• Have good associations, avoid the bad! Phase them out slowly if required.
• Do not aggravate the bully, or give them extra cause to bully you. If you can identify what is causing it, then modify what you do, but as long as it does not stifle your personality, or learning experience at school
• Do not boast excessively at school, or make yourself a target
• Change schools – sounds drastic, but it can work. When you change, keep a low profile, and be natural
• Try to go to classes that are well supervised, and the other students are not allowed to “mess around”
• Do not dwell on the past, look past the issue, as often bullying will move from you to elsewhere, or stop
• Use reliable prefect pupils at school, and get help from them
• Form a group of people with common problems, and work as one against it and bolster each other up
• Do not give in to depression, or suicidal tendencies!
• Above all – See It – Stop It – Report It!

Cyber-Bully-Cyber-Bullying

Bullying is very stressful to be on the receiving end of; and it can lead to post-traumatic stress, and a whole host of problems if left unchecked.

FLASHBACK!

 What is this, flashback? Well bullying can cause flashbacks, and I have had my share of them!

I never had confidence to perform in front of an audience – and I found out why recently!…

Once I was bullied at school for a while about how I speak, “day-in-day-out”, relentlessly by one person, and while rehearsing for a play later on I was being ripped about this speech thing all the time so much that I was put off doing the play.

The play was over two nights, and when I was taking part I went on the first night, but not on the second, as my confidence had folded!

The next week I was in “trouble” all week with the teachers and kids for not turning up on the second night!

I realised many years later why I didn’t turn up for this play, and why my confidence was diminished, as I had a flashback in a dream about the same situation, but more up to date, but nonetheless based on this “schoolboy experience”.

This goes to show the far-reaching effect of bullying! You don’t always know of begin to understand the psychological damaged caused to an individual by bullying, which undermines their confidence and abilities!

I can say that thanks to this flashback, I am beginning to understand how the human mind reacts to a situation, and the subliminal effects of life’s experiences, and how they affect human behaviour.

I had forgotten about the experience a long time ago, but something recently triggered it, maybe seeing someone I knew from school who wasn’t actually involved in the bullying, but it did trigger the thoughts I had, even after many years, but however, it did benefit me a lot having the flashback, in that I understood it.

Having this flashback also enabled me to deal with the real problem, so in effect I have “repaired myself” from this problem, as it has come full circle, and I realise the cause of it, and how to bypass this problem in the future!

May you do the same, as you re-discover and reinvent yourself later on in life – life can be wonderful, but life is precious and short, so may this article help you to make the most of it!

Bullying Consequences And Where It Occurs

If you are a bully reading this; Think! What are you doing to this individual? Are you ruining their lives and future? What if it was you on the receiving and of  the bullying?

Think about it! We are all human beings; are you really more important than the next person? Is putting this person down really making you feel that good?

Don’t you really have some other problems that need addressing; now do you! Now be brutally honest with yourself for once!

Now don’t you have feelings of alienation, and guilt after bullying someone?

Just think about what you are doing and why; don’t give in to peer pressure!

Peer pressure can be a leading factor in a bullying situation and build up to it.

• Do not let yourself be influenced by your peers to engage in damaging and bullying behaviour.
• Remember bullies that are divided, often fall, so don’t join up with them
• Take the lead in the good, and downplay attempts from peers to rope you in to wrongdoing!
• Also bad association with the wrong people can lead to bullying
• Lack of parental guidance, and a poor upbringing lacking education can lead to bullying, and bad association

Lichtenberg Figures, what are Lichtenberg Figures exactly?

Lichtenberg Figures in a nutshell are now purchasable ornaments that are set in acrylic plastic.

The manufacturer first irradiates the acrylic blocks with electrons, creating a thin layer of super charge within the acrylic of more than a million volts. In effect the acrylic blocks are acting like a condenser!

Upon leaving the area, the acrylic block is spiked with an electrode pressed into the edge penetrating the acrylic slightly before the charge leaks away naturally.

The result is a loud bang! as the charge leaves the acrylic block in a fraction of a second, and upon exiting the block, the electrical discharge within the acrylic block creates electrical pathways permanently etched into it, just like miniature lightening streaks. This is where the discharge has vaporised the acrylic inside the block, and the exit pathways are clearly visible!

A nice conversation piece and a great looking ornament!

The best way to display them is like I have on an LED illuminated base, and then the true glory of the Lichtenberg Figure really comes out all on its own!

They are named after the German physicist Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, who originally discovered and studied them. In 1777, Lichtenberg built a large electrophorus to generate high voltage static electricity through induction. Cathy Glass - I Miss Mummy

Cathy Glass Foster Carer – Book Review – Fostering & Raising Children Successfully – makes excellent reading and inspiration

“Cathy Glass” you may say “what a strange name”, “what is she all about?”…

I said the same when I spotted this book during my studies…

A lot of people will say “why read “angst” for goodness sake; life is bad enough as it is; read something uplifting and humorous instead for goodness sake! Well this is uplifting when looked at in the right way! Life sometimes is about “making a difference”, and being selfless sometimes, as well has having to drive and determination to shine through against all odds!

“Cathy” could have quite easily have chosen not to do anything positive herself, and take the path of least resistance and enjoy and take the “easy life”; but no; she chose the better portion, and to make a difference for the better!

Cathy took it on board to not only make a big difference in what she did; but to candidly and honestly document her experience to help to show people what it was like to be a foster carer and parent, and maybe to paint the picture as it really was, to help other people who are doing the same, and to give people inspiration who may that way inclined to also “make a difference”, as they say!

No doubt she has now turned the corner financially since she has become recognised as a popular book author and publisher; but I’m sure that Cathy has improved as a person, and as a carer greatly because of it. She has no doubt been able to plough some of her new resources back into what she does best – fostering, and looking after children who need “opening up”, and putting back onto the “normal path of life” that so many of us take for granted!

While reading the books, I do sense that Cathy may not have had all of the help and financial means to achieve all that she wanted at the start. I also see that her personal life may have had some turns, with her husband who appears to leave her; and  having to rear two children of her own; one adopted child, as well as the foster care children.

The foster care that Cathy did apparently started just after the time that she fell pregnant with her first child; initially she did it because she responded to an advert desperate to recruit foster parents, and wanted to have a go at it, and no doubt wanted children of her own too. This lead on to greater things, as she became more fully immersed in what she was doing!

After reading this, my wife and I are thankful that we do have very good parents who love us lots; and that we love them all very much too. We both help them very often when we need to, or we can do so. It is easy to take for granted a normal and healthy upbringing, when so many others are suffering all around us, let alone in other countries

Cathy Glass isn’t her real name, her name has been changed; she is a foster carer who has many years of experience looking after neglected children from deprived and abusive backgrounds, and having quite a measure of success and a sense of achievement from doing so.

I have read all of her main books so far, and I do rate the content as “five star – first class”, of a very absorbing quality and moral value, as well as appreciating what the the author herself did, who has made a big difference by fostering more than 50 children so far.

Cathy Glass has had a great measure of success, and I am sure a genuinely unselfish sense of achievement, starting out maybe young, nervously and shakily, but very quickly getting into fostering, and doing a really good job after not too long. I get the impression that Cathy was and is always learning, and building upon each experience, really making a difference, having a real unselfish interest in what she is doing.

I have to admire her and hand it to her for her self-sacrificing spirit, and endless patience in trying different methods to bring the children in her care around to a more “normal” condition, and enriching their lives no end.

Having an interest in “doing something beneficial” for people, as well as counselling and “social work”, I have read quite a few books about counselling, social work, social care, as well as psychology. I also have a qualification in human biology, besides having an interest in general medicine, and some experience as a volunteer in the past in a few various settings.

I read Cathy’s first book “Damaged”; about a young girl “Jodie”, who eventually revealed her terrible background to Cathy as her trust in Cathy grew. Cathy shows how although some carers had not been successful, she seemed to find a way to reach her heart, and at that time Cathy did feel a failure she says; but the end result was positive after all!

Quoting briefly from the Daily Mail…

“Essentially, Jodie – who Cathy writes about in her bestselling book Damaged – had been at the heart of a paedophile ring. ‘Jodie would have died if she hadn’t been brought into the care system,’ says Cathy. ‘And when it comes to her parents, I do feel anger. It was evil, what they allowed to happen to her. Jodie’s case was exceptionally sad.’

Would-be foster carers should not be put off by cases like Jodie’s, believes Cathy. ‘Obviously you never quite know what baggage a child will come with, but where it’s known to be bad, social workers place children with more experienced carers.’”

Cathy has not only made a success of her fostering career; but she has been able to capture the events in words and put them to paper in a way that inspires people to do great things!

I found out about Cathy Glass while I was doing my Social Work research; and I bought a copy of “Damaged”, which I read through in just a few sittings for an hour or so each night.

After I had read the book, I handed it over to my wife, Teresa to read. Teresa then passed it on to other members of the family to read. Teresa was experiencing a lot of varied emotions, as was I too when reading the book, as the child portrayed in the book went through a roller-coaster of emotions, trials and tribulations while mending mentally, and growing through her anger, and other emotions, as well as her old disturbed family memories flooding back and disturbing her later on during her recovery.

In “Damaged” Cathy does feel a failure at the end; however she learns later on that she wasn’t – and far from it!

All the way through you are rooting for Cathy to pull each child through successfully, and to be able to get them to move on in life and put most, if not all of their bad early childhood behind them!

No-one who started this book could put it down until it had been fully read from cover to cover within a week!

I asked my wife Teresa to look out for some later releases that Cathy had published; and I have purchased and read some of them already.

The books do vary in approach somewhat, as both Cathy’s experience, and each different child’s problems differ, and she has to employ different tactics.

I recommend this book, as it offers some good practical guidance, and may help you to speed up your parenting learning curve, and to avoid many of the common pitfalls that many well-intended parents can fall into

I will read more as they come out, and as I order them..

Certainly Cathy is a well-intended lady, who deserves some accolade, and her books are well worth a read…

Highly recommended in my opinion, and a five star first class read for people who have even a slight interest in fostering, and advanced child rearing techniques!

Although nobody is perfect; you could certainly do a lot worse than to embrace some of the parenting skills that Cathy demonstrates, and shows you in her gripping true-to-life books.

Kodak Pre-Charged Digital Camera Batteries

What are these batteries I say?It looks like you can buy batteries that are rechargeable, but they actually come charged from the word go!

Great stuff for digital cameras, and electronic devices that need a fast turnaround battery solution.

“The idea is that people don’t purchase rechargeable batteries because they need to use them right away.  In the past you couldn’t pre-charge Ni-Cad rechargeable batteries because they would lose their charge while sitting on the shelf.  The new pre-charged batteries seem to overcome this problem which also means you can charge up the batteries and not use it for awhile without losing power. 

I’m still testing them out to write up a better review of their performance.  Duracell seems light on stats for the batteries with most of their efforts going into marketing based on humor, however the product seems good and will probably convert me back to using rechargeable batteries after a long hiatus due to the short comings of Ni-Cad technology.”

Now that’s what has done me in the past with rechargeable batteries…

You buy the batteries and they are flat!

OK, you charge them up, and store them for a month or two, you are then thinking OK; I’ll slam these batteries into my camera, and bingo! Away you go to a photoshoot!

Nahhhh!… no such luck!

They are as flat as pancakes! The motor or whatever turns half a turn, and then stops! DOH!

The solution at last is here!

Great for gifts too I just thought! Yes they’ll be usable; but you need to remind the receiver of the gift(s) that they need to be recharged once they have run down!

Maybe a battery charger should be included with the gift!

Duracell Pre-Chared Batteries With Charger

The low self-discharge nickel-metal hydride battery (LSD NiMH) was introduced in November 2005. These batteries were developed by Sanyo, who called them “Eneloop”. Subsequently other manufacturers also offer LSD NiMH.

This kind of battery reduces self-discharge and, therefore, lengthens shelf life compared to normal NiMH batteries. By using improved separator and improved positive electrode, manufacturers claim the batteries retain 70 to 85% of their capacity after one year when stored at 20 °C (68 °F), while standard NiMH batteries may lose half their charge in this time period. Low self-discharge cells are marketed as “ready-to-use” or “pre-charged” rechargeable batteries.

Low self-discharge NiMH batteries are good for photography and other high energy requirement applications. Due to the low self-discharge, they are also suitable for long-term intermittent or low-current uses; they might last a year or longer between charges, much better than ordinary NiMH batteries. They can therefore also be used for electrical clocks, remote controls, etc.

Aside from their longer shelf life, and moderately higher prices, they are otherwise similar to normal NiMH batteries of equivalent capacity and can be charged with normal NiMH chargers. However they are generally available at lower capacities than the highest capacity of normal NiMH batteries, being rated at 2000 to 2200 mAh compared to up to 2800 mAh for normal NiMH. In 2009 LSD-NiMH batteries rated at 2300 to 2500 mAh, actually reaching a capacity of 2300 mAh, were introduced by Varta, Ansmann and Rayovac. Besides, in many devices, run-times for LSD NiMH batteries are as good or better than normal cells that have higher rated capacity, because of slightly higher operating voltage not tripping under-voltage shut off circuits in devices like digital cameras. Some LSD NiMH brands also claim over 1000 charge cycles compared to 500 for normal cells.

Encore Pre-Charged NI-MH Rechargeable Battery Size AAA

Most manufacturers produce only size AAA and AA batteries and the vast majority of low self discharge batteries are sold in these sizes. Several manufacturers also offer 9v (PP3) LSD NiMH batteries (Varta, Accupower, Gold Peak, Vapex, Uniross, Ansmann, NexCell and ENIX energies), rated between 150mAh and 250mAh.However, many battery companies also market “low capacity” C- and D-size battery by inserting an AA battery into a larger case.

Re-wrapped Cs typically have a capacity of just 2 to 2.2 Ah. Re-wrapped Ds typically have a capacity of just 2 to 2.2 Ah when constructed of one AA, or 4 to 4.4 Ah when constructed of two AAs. Although re-wraps offer very limited storage capacity, they are typically priced the same as full capacity C and D batteries.

In late 2008, Sanyo announced full capacity (not re-wrapped) C and D cells in Japan, but at that time said they had no plans to bring them to the U.S., whereas other manufacturers (Ansmann, NexCell, AccuPower) do offer full capacity C (rated at 4.5 Ah) and D-size LSD-NiMH-cells (rated from 8-10 Ah) in the U.S. Unlike Sanyo’s C and D cells, these cells, however, do not contain a Positive Temperature Coefficient (PTC) device to protect them against overheating.

Their capacity, on the other hand, is superior to Sanyo’s cells, since Sanyo’s C size LSD-NiMH-batteries are rated at 3 Ah and Sanyo’s D size LSD-NiMH batteries are rated at 5.7 Ah.

Full capacity low self discharge batteries are noticeably heavy. However, one should always read the specifications when shopping for low self discharge batteries. Because re-wrapping and repackaging is a problem in the battery business, one may also wish to avoid low self discharge batteries that do not have the specifications clearly printed on the actual battery. 

Other benefits

Low self-discharge NiMH batteries typically have a significantly lower internal resistance than traditional NiMH batteries. This has a number of desirable effects especially for high-drain applications:

• Voltage is more stable (less load- and capacity-dependent). This can have a beneficial effect on run-time in electronic devices, which typically have a cut-off voltage per battery that is not much lower than NiMH’s nominal voltage. (However, this can also cause some devices with battery status indicators to overestimate the remaining capacity of a nearly drained cell.)
• Reduced heat buildup when the battery is quickly charged or discharged
• Higher efficiency
• Higher instantaneous current discharge capability

Developments in 2009

Whereas Varta (USA: Rayovac) and Ansmann increased their LSD-NiMH batteries’ capacity to roughly 2300 mAh, Sanyo introduced a new version of their Eneloop batteries with improved durability. Sanyo claims that the new Eneloops retain 75% of their charge after 3 years and can be recharged up to 1500 times. Having looked at this, I’ll have to say that I rate these batteries; if they keep their charge for a few months ate least, then they can be cycled a lot more, and it also extends their usage to appliances that you don’t use quite so often.

Chelsea Flower Show 2007 Highlights

The Great Spring Show

Some History (Quoting from Wikipedia)

“The first Royal Horticultural Society Great Spring Show was held in 1862, at the RHS garden in Kensington. Before this date the RHS had held flower shows from 1833 in their garden in Chiswick, which themselves had been preceded by fetes.

The Kensington Garden was chosen as a site because the flower shows in Chiswick were experiencing falling visitor numbers due to problems such as poor transport links.

The Great Spring Show was held at Kensington for twenty-six years but in 1888 the RHS decided to move the show to the heart of London.

The site chosen was the Temple Gardens, situated between the Embankment and Fleet Street, which had a recorded history dating back to 1307 and which were said to date from the time of the Knights Templar.

The roses for which these Temple Gardens were famous were alluded to in Shakespeare’s Henry VI Part 1. Using two marquees requisitioned from the old Kensington shows the 1888 show was a success with exhibits from both amateurs and commercial firms.

By 1897 five marquees were being used with many of the best known plant and seed merchants being attracted to the event including Suttons and Sons.

Royal International Horticultural Exhibition

In 1912, the Temple Show was cancelled to make way for the Royal International Horticultural Exhibition. Sir Harry Veitch, the great nurseryman, secured the grounds of the Royal Hospital, Chelsea, for this one-off event. It proved such a good site for an exhibition that the Great Spring Show was moved there in 1913, where it has taken place almost every year since.

Royal Hospital, Chelsea – early 20th century

The RHS first became involved with the Chelsea Hospital in 1905. Three years before, it had leased the grounds of Holland House in Kensington to hold what was first advertised as a Coronation Rose Show, but which turned into a more general show (with not many roses) by the time it actually opened in June.

Two further two-day summer shows took place at Holland House in 1903 and 1904, but then, to the general satisfaction of exhibitors and press, a three-day Summer Show was staged in the Hospital grounds, a more spacious site than Holland House had allowed, with room for five tents.

The Summer Shows reverted to Holland House for the years thereafter, except in 1911, when both it and Chelsea proved unavailable, and the Show was held at the Olympia exhibition hall.

The Royal International Horticultural Exhibition of 1912 demonstrated, at a time when the complaints from the Temple were increasing annually, what an excellent site for a show the grounds of the Chelsea Hospital provided.

Accordingly, for 1913, the Great Spring Show was moved there, while the Summer Show reverted to Holland House. Despite the First World War, the show was held 1914 – 1916, but was cancelled in 1917 and 1918.

By the roaring 1920s, the Chelsea Flower Show was back in full swing, the famous Chelsea tea parties were established and Royal visits resumed. In 1926 the show was held a week late due to the General Strike.

In 1937, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth celebrated their Coronation Year, and to mark the occasion, a superb Empire Exhibition was staged. It featured wattles from Australia, pines from Canada, brilliant gladioli from East Africa and even a big prickly pear from Palestine.

The show was cancelled during the Second World War, as the land was required by the War Office for an anti-aircraft site. Some doubt arose as to whether the show would resume in 1947. The majority of exhibitors wanted a postponement, as stocks of plants were low, staff much depleted and fuel for greenhouses was obtainable only with special permits, but Lord Aberconway (then RHS President) and the RHS Council felt strongly that the show should resume as soon as possible.

As it turned out, the show went ahead in 1947 and it was a great success.

The Hospital - Chelsea Flower Show 2007 Highlights

Royal Hospital, Chelsea – later 20th century

The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 was sufficient cause for a flower show that reflected the celebratory mood of the country. Most members of the Royal family attended that year. Unfortunately, due to other commitments, the only Royal unable to attend was the Queen herself.

And the Show went on to increasing popularity throughout the second half of the century – until its popularity became its major problem. Crowding within the tents had been a recurring refrain during the interwar years, but always mastered by increasing the tentage; photographs show heavy crowds in the open, especially in the vicinity of the rock gardens.

As the 1970s progressed, the attendance at the Chelsea Show climbed, by as much as 6,000 visitors in a single year (1978). In 1979, crowding became so severe in the mornings that the turnstiles were temporarily closed, and it was clear that some emergency action was needed.

It was decided to open the Show at 8 am next year, and close it at 8.30 in the evenings, with a reduced price for entry after 4 pm, to try to draw people away from the morning time-slot; and a one-way system was laid out in the marquee (an expedient that had been rejected as impracticable 20 years earlier).

The arrangements worked better than expected in 1980, when a bare majority of Council voted for the imposition of a ceiling on the number of tickets sold. But numbers continued to increase, and in 1987 the turnstiles were closed again.

In 1988 a limit of 40,000 visitors per day was imposed – a reduction of 90,000 in total from the previous year – and members were charged for tickets for the first time. An immediate response was a fall in attendance; by April, ticket booking was so slow that national advertisements were taken out to encourage people to come to Chelsea, and the original announcement that tickets would not be available at the gates was rescinded.

1988 was also the first year that ticket touts made their presence felt, and the RHS felt the frustration of seeing its tickets sold at a considerable mark-up without being able to do anything.

An alarmed Council now began to look seriously at the idea of moving the Show to a larger venue. Battersea Park, Osterley Park, and Wisley were suggested; one proposal was that Chelsea should be limited to plant sales, and the sundries rerouted elsewhere; the firm of Land Use Consultants was hired to prepare a feasibility study, and after examining all these options, concluded that the Show should stay at Chelsea.

The real rescue came from the expansion of the shows programme into other venues, and in particular from the takeover of the Hampton Court Palace Flower Show in 1993: the increased options for both members and for exhibitors meant that the intense criticisms and conflict of the 1980s over the future of the Show did not return.”

Blind Cord & Drowning Danger Awareness For Parents & Children

Warning! Corded blinds can kill a child in minutes!

Window Blinds Strangulation Risk

Yes that is a fact; A child nearly every week is killed by this often unnoticed hazard in many houses when children are playing unsupervised!

Window Blinds Strangulation Risk

Older blinds, old stock, and old installations (at the grandparents house maybe, uncle, aunt, brother, sister, even your own!) may have this danger.

New installations have usually been thought out more carefully!

Please do not panic if you can at all help it should this happen to you. This article is to primarily raise awareness of this danger.

Although this is a highly shocking, and harrowing experience, please do your utmost immediately, regain your senses and act immediately, decisively, and safely, to maximise the chance of survival of your child.

If a child is entangled by the neck area, every second counts in getting them free and establishing a clear airway, and unrestricted circulation of blood to the brain.

If unable to loosen the cords, cut them carefully with scissors, or a sharp knife pulled in a direction away from you, and the child to avoid any further injury. Take care doing this!

Administer first aid immediately, as soon as they are freed from the cord(s), and get help if someone is present to call for an ambulance right away; but do not neglect the immediate first aid that is required, as every second counts in getting your child’s airway and circulation clear!

If you are on your own, use the phone to call for help, while still also administering first aid at the same time, without pausing if the child is unconscious or not breathing.

Mouth to mouth and/or CPR are imperative aids to use if the child isn’t breathing on his/her own, to maximise the chances of them getting through this and alive and without brain damage.

Keep the first aid going until the ambulance crew arrive and take over.

Be vigilant, and very careful. Do not leave your children unsupervised if in doubt, and get something done! Now!

“The parents of a toddler who died after becoming entangled in a window blind cord are backing a safety campaign highlighting their dangers. 

Two-year-old Muireann McLaughlin died at her home in Menstrie after falling into a looped cord while waving goodbye to her grandmother in February 2008.

The accident prompted a sheriff to call for looped blind cords to be banned. 

Her parents are now backing a national leaflet campaign being launched at Wishaw General Hospital. 

Speaking to BBC Radio Scotland’s Good Morning Scotland programme, Angus McLaughlin said the moment he found his daughter was “like a vision from hell”. 

His wife Katie added: “As with most parents we had covered locks, stair gates all the obvious things. When we had the blind fitted we’d gone to a well-known local company, we wanted a quality service, we wanted a made to measure blind. It never occurred to us it could be dangerous.” 

The McLaughlinssaid: “We do not want what happened to us to happen to anyone else and strongly urge people to remove the kind of blinds with cords and replace with non-corded products.” 

The “Make it Safe!” campaign will see leaflets and cleats – used to secure cords – distributed to thousands of households. 

Raising awareness 

Community Safety Minister Fergus Ewing said it was a sad fact that many people were unaware of the dangers to children from free-hanging blind cords. 

He added: “It is therefore imperative that we do what we can to raise awareness of the dangers and help prevent other families from facing the kind of anguish experienced by Muireann’s parents. 

“By telling people, especially parents, about the risks they can decide what they need to do to reduce those risks to their children.” 

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (Rospa) in Scotland said about two children die every year in the UK because they get tangled in blind cords. 

Some babies have been accidentally strangled by cords hanging into their cots. 

Jennifer Henderson, Rospa Scotland’s home safety officer, said: “With blinds already fitted in so many homes, it is important to raise awareness of the danger and how these accidents can be prevented. 

“Rospa is also continuing to work with the blind industry, government and standards bodies at a UK and European level to seek modifications to the design of blinds.””

“Child drowns on holiday in Florida”

“A FAMILY has been devastated by the accidental drowning of a toddler in a Florida pool. 

Two-year-old Thomas Edwards from Llandegla, Denbighshire, was found face down in a pool during a family holiday in the USA. 

Jane Duley, the youngster’s godmother told the Daily Post last night that parents Wendy and Martin had been traumatised by the tragic death. 

The couple, who own bespoke kitchen and furniture makers Tegla, based in Llandegla, were enjoying a break in the sunshine resort of Davenport, Florida, when the disaster struck. 

Initial police reports, which have been retracted by Polk County Sheriff’s office, suggested Thomas was left in the pool with one of his two brothers. 

Speaking last night from Florida, which is five hours behind the UK, a police spokeswoman said that further investigation by detectives had ruled that out. 

She said: “We’ve now had the autopsy and confirmed that this was accidental drowning. 

“The family had all got out of the pool and gone inside and changed into dry clothing and were all done playing in the pool.

Personalised-Number-Plate

After three months or so searching, I finally found the one I liked! On the same day all of the five character numbers in that series had all sold!

You can buy one from a dealer, or directly from the DVLA, as sometimes they may have just the plate you want if the dealer hasn’t got it.

So I was lucky to be able to get this particular plate before they all sold out! And cheaply from the DVLA by a stroke of luck!

I had my plates made up by a proper number plate manufacturing company correctly and legally, so before I chose my “dream  number”, I made sure that it would look the part legally!

The novelty value is enormous, and it hides the age of your car too, as well as “smartening” up the car.
It can also be a “conversation piece” as well!

The idea of this article, isn’t to go on about my own number plate any more though; but to talk about the basic “ins and outs of getting one”, and how to transfer it on your car legally.

Thousands of people are driving around with illegal number plates though, and so this article should help to identify the potential problem.

When you have bought a personalised plate, you get a document saying that you own this number plate, and it lasts for 12 months, or until you put it onto a car.

If you keep it “on retention” as they say, then you will have to pay a small fee each year to keep the number plate going, or until it is on a vehicle.

When you put the number plate onto a vehicle you have to transfer it over using a form from the DVLA.
You get a letter after two weeks saying that you can now change the plate over, and of course notify your insurance.

• Be sure to tell the insurance, and that in the event of an accident that they have “no interest” in the plate, so it remains yours to claim back.

• In the event of an accident, you should retain your plate right away if you think that your car will be written off, or else you may lose your private plate.

If you are buying a brand new vehicle, you can simply hand the document over to the dealer, and a new set of plates, then he will fit them and register it on the new plate from the start.

• When having a new number plate made up, you must by law have it made at an official registered number plate maker, and provide the correct documentation to have the number plates made legally, for UK legal road use.

• If using the car for show, or off the public highway you can have “show plates”, but if you are using your car on the public highway you must have legally made plates.

You have the choice of two legal fonts…

• You can have “Legal 3D”…

So to be fully legal have the above mentioned dimensions and choice of the two fonts shown above.

• The number plate must have the manufacturer’s name (of the number plate) written on the bottom of it in small writing, or in the border (if required).

If in the UK, you can also have a legal “GB” symbol on the plate if you want it, or you can have a plate without one if you like.

If you opt for a GB symbol, you don’t need a GB sticker for travel outside the UK. A legal GB logo on a number plate can often help to balance the symmetry of the plate, especially for short five character numbers making it all look centrally placed and even to look at.

• Any securing bolts (if used) must be the same colour as the characters, or the background that they appear on.

• Do not use different colours to misrepresent your plates.

• No honeycomb of other background is permitted.

• No other symbols and logos are permitted.

• Any additional advertising may appear on a separate tab below the number plate area, but it should not be in the area of the number plate “body” at all, or be in the “legal area” required by law.

If you use an illegal plate you can expect…

• A fine penalty at least.

• Possible withdrawal of the number by the police.

• You will have to have a proper legal plate remade, remove the incorrect one and replace it.

• Your car will fail the M.O.T.

• You risk being stopped by police regularly.

• Cameras cannot recognise the number plate making your car suspicious to the authorities.

The DVLA or most reputable companies would rather that you don’t order the plate if you intend misrepresenting it in any way.

Personalised plates can be…

• Old pre-registration plates, these can be put onto a vehicle of any age, as they are “ageless” and don’t have a start date as such. These are usually more expensive; hence the term “cherished”. They increase in value usually.

• Prefix ones have the year at the start like M7 LWT. The plate cannot be used on cars older than the year that the plate states. These aren’t really “cherished”, but are personalised, but they can increase in value as well.

• New style ones on modern cars since 2001. (explained below in the BBC quote). Some good ones like LAW 70N are still expensive, and this one was £41,000 (GBP).

Notice though that it is represented correctly above, but I still like it!

“New cars now have a letter indicating the city they are from, numbers which represent the six-month period in which they were registered, and three random digits at the end.

The authorities say the plates will be easier to read, not least by speed cameras.

But recent surveys have suggested that few people understand the new system.

Changing times

Since the early 1960s, the age of a car has been indicated by a letter displayed at the beginning or end of the number plate.

But this system has been abandoned in favour of the new code which includes seven symbols, such as AB51 CDE.

The first two letters show where a car was registered, while the numbers indicate the age of the vehicle and whether it was bought in September-February or March-August.

The last three letters are random.

Under the new system, a car bought in the Ipswich area between now and next March, would carry a plate beginning with AV, AW, AX, or AY.

The next two numbers would be 51, with 5 indicating a September-March period purchase and 1 representing the year (2001).

The same car bought next March would feature a plate with the numbers 02, with 0 showing the vehicle was bought between March-August, and 2 for the year 2002.”

Loft Insulation

 Lagging against the heat and cold you may say surprisingly? Yes!

You can save energy both on central heating, and air conditioning if you do it right!

In the summer your house can get unbearably hot, and in the winter it can get unbearably cold, and/or be very costly to heat.

What can you do then, and how about the effectiveness, and the payback time?

If you only have 2, 4, 6 or 8″ (inches; one inch = 2.5cm approx), then it is time to beef up your loft lagging up to 12″, or 1 ft (30cm).

The results are immediate; it helps to keep the heat out in the summer, and keep it in during the winter.

Nothing has a faster payback time than installing effective loft lagging. It isn’t expensive, and you can even get a grant towards it in some countries/areas!

Half of your heat is lost through the loft, so reduce it!

You can fit it yourself, (wear safety equipment to protect you against the fibre-glass, be careful; watch where you are treading in the loft, as you’ll come through the plasterboard in some homes that are not boarded out in the loft!)

***WATCH POINT*** Be sure to insulate any water tanks in the loft, as they will cool down a lot more (and will freeze and may burst in the winter). Be sure fit no insulation beneath them (to keep them warmer). Better still, fit a combination boiler, and dispense with your hot, cold, and header water tank(s).

Roof Insulation

If you have a loft conversion, then it is important to lag inside the roof area as above, rather than below, so that you get heat from the house into the area, but still don’t lose as much through the roof tiles, or slates. If you don’t use the room a great  deal you can insulate the floor a little, as well as the roof, and therefore get the best of both worlds; but you may need to heat your loft converted room a little more in the winter.

The benefits also not only include keeping in the heat; but also keeping out the excessive heat from the sun during the Summer, and so helping to prevent the roof cavity from becoming a “sweat box” if you are using it to live in.

Another area where you can save money, and retain heat or keep it out to some extent, is to install cavity wall insulation. Very modern houses usually have a layer of insulation in between the inner breeze blocks and the outer brickwork, but earlier houses will have just an air gap.

While air is a good insulator, it isn’t as good as cavity wall filling. Air also convects, causes draughts, and cool air sinks to the lowest point.

The payback time is reasonable, and the comfort levels in the home will improve greatly. A third of the heat is lost through the walls, and this can help to reduce this greatly.

I prefer the modern insulation like above, as this does not fall out of holes and cracks when doing DIY, or drilling holes in the wall.

The “old type” using small balls of what looks like “polystyrene tiles” falls out of the cavity when exposed. Most use the modern fibre type, and this holds together well.

Under my stairs was always a cold place, and when it was done I could feel the difference under there right away!

They also asked if I wanted the walls lagging inside my porch and conservatory. I opted for this to be done as well, to keep the heat out of the house in the summer on the conservatory, and at the front to keep out the cold, as it is North facing at the front of my house.

I’ll tell you… it does work. If you don’t have a cavity, you can insulate your walls inside (losing space though and having to redecorate), or have a cladding on the outside of your house added instead, but these options are costly.

A “cheap” alternative, may be to line your walls yourself where required with thick lining foam and then paper over this.

Grants may be available for standard cavity wall insulation (in the UK at least anyway), and the price left remaining for you to pay is very reasonable, with maybe a ten year payback time, or much less than that if you get a good Government grant towards some of the installation costs.

One point that I really noticed about cavity wall insulation, is not only how much more and longer any heat is retained; but how good it is at stopping walls from warming up inside the house after the sun has been out all day in the height of summer.

I have observed that  very good loft lagging, combined with properly installed cavity wall insulation has been proven as the two most effective thermal barriers against not only the cold and heat losses, in the Winter; but also an excellent barrier helping to prevent your house from overheating in the summer.

The savings then are not only on heat losses, but also on heat gain in the summer; reducing the amount of air-conditioning time required.

OK how about under the floorboards?

There is the option of having under-floor insulation sprayed into place under the floorboards.

Or you can have sections of insulation fitted under the floor.

The cold air circulating around under floorboards, and can make the floor feel very cold, clammy and damp. The insulation provides a thermal break, and you can save up to fifty pounds (£50.00) a year from heat loss in this way, apart from having warm feet!

If you have a concrete floor you can add more underlay, but I have found personally, that standard underlay, and a carpet are fine, or laminate floor on top of insulating underlay. (Personally I find laminate floors in main living areas cold, dusty with loose dust, and noisy). Carpets may hold more pests and dust, but they are less airborne; you can always clean and vacuum them regularly. That is just my opinion anyway!

The above are the most cost-effective ways of saving money, with faster payback times; but what else can you do?

Double glazing is another effective way, but it is costly compared to how much you save; however it adds value to the property, looks nice, and it does work.

The gap in between the glass should be at least 16mm, and this will act as a thermal break from the cold.

Pilkington “K” (trade mark) glass is another add-on; and this will cause low frequency infrared (heat producing) wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum to bounce off and stay indoors, and so keeping in the heat.

They can also call it “low E” double glazing…

Benefits as well from double glazing are…

• Better insulation properties
• Easier to clean
• More secure locks usually
• Looks good for longer
• No painting required
• Does not rot

On the downside, the double glazing panels may leak, and allow moisture in between the glass, and the uPVC may change colour from exposure to the ultraviolet rays from the sun.

Cheap locks and fittings may break, rust, or become sloppy and loose. Always insist on the best that you can afford!

Obviously with a very long payback time, but a nice add-on to make your house look nice, and maybe even give a little extra storage, the addition of a porch is a nice idea.

Don’t forget to follow any legalities as regards planning permission, and sizing!

A conservatory on the rear of the house, especially if it is on a sunny aspect is a great addition, giving you an extra room, storage, and gaining heat from the sun.

Again, be careful with planning permission, and do the job right.

Get the foundations laid down correctly with a thermal break, and damp protection etc.

What else can you do?

Lag your pipes… Lag all pipes, including central heating pipes under the floor, so that your main heat comes from your radiators, and not the pipes where you don’t want it!

Lag pipes that are suspect to freezing, and consider extra layers where it is exceptionally likely, and/or use a small greenhouse heater in the winter to protect them, paraffin, or a small 150 Watt electric “thermo-tube” or electric panel set on frost protection only to save money on energy.

These thermo-tubes or panels can be controlled by a plug-in thermostat, a time switch, or a combination of both, or a combined time switch programmer, and thermostat in one plug-in, or wall mounted device. Some time switches/programmers may take AA or similar batteries as well for the digital timer operation, and so these may need changing once per year or so, but are very safe and reliable generally, and warn you when the batteries are running low.

They are greatly improved now in safety, because they are in an IP54 enclosure. I thought it would be useful to mention this link, as they are ideal for safe, cheap, and reliable background heating, and frost protection as mentioned earlier.

***Watch Point *** Safety alert… be sure to be safe with naked flames, and electricity while these units or appliances are left unattended, and only use equipment designed for this purpose!

Be aware of children playing, or messing with the appliances! If in doubt use a proven safety approved child safe method of heating!

Also be aware of any pets in the area and their safety, as well as any hazards that they may potentially cause for you.

Lag your pipes… This can be an effective way to help to stop the pipes from freezing in the winter if they are in cold areas; and also help to keep the heat in the pipes so that you get the heat where you want it!

Use simple “clip around” insulation as shown below. It makes a difference, and also reduces noise from central heating pipes as they expand and contract under the floorboards, as well as deadening water flow noises as well!

Fit foil on the wall behind radiators to reflect heat beck into the room, and reduce losses through walls. Add a reflective (foil lined) radiator shelf to direct heat out towards the centre of the room

Other measures you can take are to use draught strips on entry and exit doors…

Just trim it to length to fit across the bottom of the door to help to seal out cold air. Remember if you can see light coming through, cold air can too!

Or use a brush strip door draught excluder these work well on more uneven floors, as the bristles will move easily, and they shouldn’t scratch or damage floors a much as rubber ones may do.

Just watch out for loose grit from your shoes on polished floors dragging under the door and scratching the floor!

If you have a cat, and need to use a cat flap, buy a modern cat flap that not only uses a magnet so only your cat can get in, but also seals and shuts tightly to help to keep out the cold air, and draughts.

If fitting a mortice lock, (mortise lock) or similar, make sure it has a key hole cover; this will keep out cutting keyhole draughts. Most modern quality uPVC doors have a key flap built-in.

These are some basic, and various ways to save on excessive heat loss, or gain, but not only to save money, but to make your home a warm, and welcoming place to live in.

Always have your damp course checked, damp needs heat to dry out, and it will feel cold and clammy in a damp room or house…

… and have it repaired and/or treated if required.

… and excessive condensation and staining on walls….

These are also areas in the house where cold clammy rising damp will feel cold if there are damp course or guttering leak problems.

Get the leaks or damp course repaired first, then treat the walls after they have dried out before re-decorating the room(s).

Always ensure adequate ventilation for excessive humidity build up; and install windows with vents built-into them.

I find a “trickle air vent” installed or built into uPVC windows will help to stop, or stop condensation and damp on walls inside windows; especially on cold North facing rooms!

Don’t employ cowboys, and always get three to five quotes before proceeding with the best one for you, which may not be the cheapest, but offers the best quality combined with value, and a good written warranty where applicable!

OK.. In what ways…

• Bullying from bosses, team leaders and supervisors, shouting, threatening, and even pushing you around

• Being the constant victim of “office pranks”  or “workshop pranks” that aren’t really a joke!
• Being gossiped about
• Cyber bullying on the ‘phone, email, over the network, or the Internet
• Sexual advances (sexual harassment) continue (either sex) when you have clearly stated boundaries at work, and are quite happy the way you are
• You are continually and always a “dogs body”, and no-one has any respect for you

The list can go on… but what can you do?

If it isn’t that straightforward

Go to the next management level up if it is your manager, or report them to Human Resources (personnel).

Take legal action

As a last resort you can take legal action, and even claim unfair dismissal, and loss of earnings if the problem is that severe.

Be sure to build up a good case with your documented evidence, and witnesses.

OK you have read this far…

What about myself then, fast forwarding to my later years…

I was a victim of bullying at school, yes primary, secondary AND work!

What did I do about it?

Initially I handled it wrong, and dug myself in deeper…

However I applied some of the techniques above, and gradually I came through it.

I have “taken stock of myself” now so to speak, in that I have realised that we are all human beings, and that generally we want the same thing!

To be liked, and to get on in life!

Something goes wrong with this process though, and we resort to other methodology to achieve the same result, bypassing as it were “convention”, etiquette, and the social accepted norm.

If my experience and age now have taught me nothing else; they have taught me this…

You need to stand up to the bullying, and use the official channels to do so!

Yes; defeat them!

Do not let them bring you down, stand up for yourself, (legally). You have the same rights as they do; and if it does not feel right, it probably isn’t!

A few other things that went against me, and may do you as well…

• Don’t be “all trusting”, if your “6th sense” tells you that something does not ring true, then change your approach
• Don’t tell people all your personal business and leave yourself open to criticism and backstabbing
• Do not become over-familiar with people you don’t know well, or are not sure if you can trust
• Don’t talk too much
• Don’t talk down to people, and show respect if they deserve it
• Don’t gossip, or intimidate them
• Don’t make threats in return
• A “mild answer turns away rage“, so the Proverbs say by wise king Solomon – They are quite correct in this saying!
• Do Forgive and forget a resolved matter and move on to lighter things
• Apologise where appropriate, and necessary
• Do not “creep” to be accepted, do what you know is right
• Do be light-hearted and jovial in nature
• Try to smile in a friendly manner
• A good tasteful and appropriate joke or two will help smooth over things, and lighten up a “heavy” situation
• Do confide in a friend, or the appropriate people to resolve a difficult matter!
• Make good friends, and steer away from “bad association” as and when you can!
• Don’t let people walk all over you; be assertive at the right time, and in the right manner!
• Join a support group
• Be a friend to make a friend
• Develop self-confidence, and retrain yourself in this
• Don’t give in to suicidal tendencies!
• See It Stop It Report It!

I applied some of the above, and now I regard myself as well thought of generally at work, with few enemies, and fairly “down the middle” as they say.

I will say that my experiences have damaged my self-confidence; so I have had an uphill struggle to pull this ability up a lot more, including having the nerve to do this blog and have an online presence!

I have battled with shyness and inadequacies for years, and suffered psychological and social effects, drawbacks, and losses!

I have flashbacks to major turning points in my life, and often feel panic and emotions rushing through my nerves!

Indeed I have to constantly get a grip on reality and face life for what it is -  a journey to be discovered, and there are a lot of good things in life.

Also I can thank the fact that I have a very supportive family and wife, and this has helped me tremendously!

Writing this article has also helped me tremendously, and looking at the page-hits on this article alone, I do realise that I am not alone in this, or with this problem.

OK, not everyone likes everyone all of the time; this is impossible (we are all different); but I have re-invented myself to always try to be man enough to sort out a problem whatever it is, and get the best solution I can in the end.

If all else fails in life, in spite of your best efforts, and reporting of it; change jobs, make new friends; build self-confidence (classes may help), re-route your life; re-energise, re-program yourself, and don’t forget…

Re-invent yourself!

…Just don’t leave it 25 to 30 years to deal with it like I did!

…Time is precious; life is short; so use it wisely!

Lack of building regulations or what?

Changing the subject somewhat below…

 …Now I couldn’t believe this!

 This woman Mary Bale of Coventry, 45, decided to nicely pet a cat named Lola, initially…

…and then suddenly she decided to plonk Lola into a wheelie bin and close the lid over it!

What was going on there?

What was she thinking?

I will call this “cat petting fail!”

Well, what do you think folks?…

• Attention seeking? (well no, I don’t think so; she was unaware of the camera)
• Looking for fame and fortune maybe? (well no; as the above applies)
• Looking for a change from a boring and uneventful life? (maybe subconsciously, and doing this was a bit of a rush for her, maybe like shoplifting, or similar, when you are finacially well off)
• Venting misplaced subconscious feelings and anger somewhere else?
• Underlying stress? (now this could be it, as I can relate to this one, to be discussed in my ”bullying” article)
• Depression, anxiety, and needing an outlet somewhere else maybe?

OK then folks; is wasn’t right what she did, showing some degree of cruelty to animals; but possible reasons do exist for people to do off-beat things, often bad.

OK we’ll move on then!
