Chilli Beer – A Different Beer

Chilli Beer

Chilli Beer

Have you ever wanted to try a different type of beer, or a different flavoured beer? Something unique, maybe a piquant flavour. Definition below…

“Piquant”

adj 1. having an agreeably pungent or tart taste

2. lively or stimulating to the mind

[from French (literally: prickling), from piquer to prick, goad; see pique1]“

So have I too… So one day when out shopping in Birmingham UK, in Rackhams (House Of Fraser), I was mooching around in their food hall in the “basement”, and I came across this beer that looked a little Mexican; maybe like “Sol” lager (which I also like).

I had a look at this beer and wow!… was I reading correctly?…

Chilli beer…

What is that green thing floating in the bottle?…

A chilli pepper! I have never heard of this beer before “chilli beer”, nah!; I’ll bet it is horrible; but what the heck! Go on; why not try it eh?

Yes, give me some of this please; I’ll try it; go on then!

So I bought six bottles expecting it to be “rank”, bitter, horrible, non-descript in flavour, and downright ready for pouring straight down the sink! But one bottle is no good; you need to really decide if you like it or not! (that’s my excuse for having a “cold one” anyway, and buying six bottles to boot!)

You always take a risk in life when you buy something new or what you haven’t tried before;… so here goes I say!

Well… I take six bottles of this beer home and chill it in the refrigerator for a couple of hours and then leave it there for some time, and then I finally decide to sample it while watching England’s fruitless labour to a goalless draw with Algeria in 2010! (that was a letdown lack-lustre game I’ll say!)

Back to my beer review of this chilli beer; I was saying a silly beer, but no; I was impressed with this chilli beer.

Another company shows it like this…

“Description: A rarity – lager with a real chilli pepper in the bottle!

A hot beer from the Black Mountain Brewery in the heart of Arizona, USA.

Napalm in a bottle!

Producer: Black Mountain Brewing Company   –   www.chilibeer.com
ABV:   4.2%
Country of Origin:   USA

Category(s):     Lager
Group(s):     Lager Bottles”

I poured out this “strange beer” into a glass, as I wanted to look at its level of clarity, and to see those green objects floating in the beer! (The hot Chillies that is).

I poured out two well chilled bottles into a nice tall clear glass, and the chillies that were at the bottom of each bottle floated in the glass, giving off their stored CO2 gasses in fine bubbles.

OK then in the palate it tastes much like say “Miller Light”, or “Sol” (Mexican lager), but in the background was the chilli lift and hotness! Nice!

It has a reasonable degree of hotness, but nothing to upset you, especially for chilli-heads like myself.

Being fair my parents did not like it too much, although my dad drank a small wine glass of it, and my mother had a small sip to try it, and said that it was “very warming when it goes down the back of your throat”, my wife didn’t like it too much either though, but she could see it could be nice with certain foods.

What Is That Green Object?

I won’t run this beer down though personally; because if you are a chilli-head in any way shape or form, or if you like food (or drink) with “zing”, then I do think you’ll like this chili beer.

I ate the peppers while drinking it; and to be honest most of their flavour was now in the beer, so they didn’t seem that hot; but they were edible, and nice, (well I thought so anyway).

The website for the beer is… http://www.chilibeer.com

An ideal accompaniment would be chicken Fajitas, Enchiladas, or Burritos (Mexican food).

For my “local UK” visitors I’ll just throw these comments in below…

If you live in the central UK and you would like a nice meal out for a “TexMex” and you know the M54 Motorway J2 area ; (Codsall, Wolverhampton),I recommend “The Bentlands” pub for a great Mexican meal; however I don’t think they sell chili beer, but I could certainly suggest it to them!

The meals however are great, and it is in a very nice “countrified” area, that is not run down, and the service and amount you get are second to none!

The Bentlands Pub http://www.bentlands.co.uk/ (but please come back here to see my sponsors, and have a look around my site a bit more hopefully)

38 Suckling Green Lane
Codsall, Wolverhampton, West Midlands WV8 2BP

Check out their menu, and they do some great real cask ales and wines, as well as the usual range of drinks.

I recommend the sizzling Fajitas, but only have the meal for one person and share it, as they are massive meals. Add two bowls of chips and a nice bottle of wine, (or non-alcoholic drinks for the driver), and you will be set up fine for two.

We had this each once, and there is too much for us, so unless you have a huge appetite, share a meal for one, and add chips and drinks of your choice.

Bon appetite!
